PDF Won't Open or Can't Copy/Print? PDF Unlock Guide
People often hit PDFs that "open but can't be copied or printed", or that "require a password just to open". These are two different situations with different fixes.
1. Two kinds of PDF "password"
| Permission lock (Owner) | Open password (User) | |
|---|---|---|
| Symptom | Opens, but copy/print/edit blocked | Password required to open at all |
| Nature | Just a restriction flag; content decrypts with empty password | Content is truly encrypted (AES/RC4) |
| Remove without password? | ✅ Yes, restrictions removed directly | ❌ No by design; needs the password |
2. Permission lock: removed without a password
If the PDF opens fine but blocks copy/print, it's a permission lock. Upload it to LightTools PDF Unlock and the tool detects and removes the restriction directly — no password needed.
🔒 Everything runs locally in your browser — files are never uploaded.
3. Open password: needs the password, or a weak-password try
If a password is required to open, the content is truly encrypted and no tool can "crack" a strong password by design. You can either enter the correct password, or — for files you legally own — try a weak-password dictionary if the password is simple.
⚠ Do not attempt to crack encrypted files you do not own; it may be illegal.
